  1. Core texts 4 items
    1. Trask's historical linguistics - R. L. Trask 2015

Book Testyn Craidd - Core Text Since I ask you to basically read almost all of this during the module, you could consider buying your own copy (for making notes in the margin etc.!) The newest edition is the 3rd edition (2015). It's OK for you to use/buy an earlier edition, or even the original textbook (by RL Trask rather than by RM Millar) if you have to, although there will be content/page number differences, but the newest edition is the one I advise you read if you can. Nevertheless, the 3rd edition is freely available for you on the library website if you prefer.

    2. Historical linguistics: an introduction - Lyle Campbell 2013

Book Testyn Craidd - Core Text This is essentially the second core textbook. I will be asking you to read some of this in addition to Trask, though usually not as the required reading. I think Trask is slightly more accessible than Campbell, but Campbell is an useful resource too.

    3. Oxford English Dictionary

Website Testyn Craidd - Core Text This is the complete online OED, though you need to use your university network connection to search it. (If you can't, use the Online Etymological Dictionary instead, which is not nearly as comprehensive but still good overall.)

    4. Geiriadur Prifysgol Cymru: a dictionary of the Welsh language - University of Wales 2003

Book Argymhellir ei ddarllen - Recommended Reading This dictionary, available online and as library volumes, is the best source to find out about the etymology of Welsh words. Some of the text is in Welsh only, but much of it is translated.

  2. Recommended readings on historical linguistics 35 items

    2. Indo-European linguistics: an introduction - James Clackson 2007

    3. Online Etymological Dictionary (of English)

Website Argymhellir ei ddarllen - Recommended Reading This is a website that allows you to find out the etymology of English words. It is perhaps more user-friendly (for the non-expert) than the OED, and is also available anywhere (not just the Bangor network, like the OED), but it is not as exhaustive or detailed as the OED is.
